Deep in the rainforests of the Indian state of Meghalaya, bridges are not built, they’re grown. For more than 500 years locals have guided roots and vines from the native Ficus Elastica (rubber tree) across rivers, using hollowed out trees to create root guidance systems. When the roots and vines reach the opposite bank they are allowed to take root. Some of the bridges are over 100 feet long and can support the weight of 50 people.

Rape Culture 101

worldsweburntogether:

sideofgreen:

A rape culture is a complex of beliefs that encourages male sexual aggression and supports violence against women. It is a society where violence is seen as sexy and sexuality as violent. In a rape culture, women perceive a continuum of threatened violence that ranges from sexual remarks to sexual touching to rape itself. A rape culture condones physical and emotional terrorism against women as the norm.
Oh, I see. Sort of like how law and society tend to frown upon and punish rape. Surely that’s encouraging it. What about female sexual aggression? What about violence against all those folks out there who aren’t women? I noticed you forgot to mention them. I mean, it’s only about half of all rape victims and all. I know that’s not nearly as important as female victims, but c’mon. At least try to give them a shout-out.

In a rape culture both men and women assume that sexual violence is a fact of life, inevitable as death or taxes. This violence, however, is neither biologically nor divinely ordained. Much of what we accept as inevitable is in fact the expression of values and attitudes that can change.
And here I was thinking that it was as common as any other form of violence. Damn, I better stop trusting statistical analysis, research, and federal studies.
But my correspondents—whether they are dewy noobs just coming to feminism, advanced feminists looking for a source, or disbelievers in the existence of the rape culture—always seem to be looking for something more comprehensive and less abstract: What is the rape culture? What are its borders? What does it look like and sound like and feel like?
First, what on earth is an advanced feminist? And second, yeah. Looking for something comprehensive is generally how you… comprehend. You can preach the gospel of feminism, but eventually people are going to realize your claims aren’t adding up. Because people are not dumb sheep to be victimized and herded about.

It is not a definition for which they’re looking; not really. It’s a description. It’s something substantive enough to reach out and touch, in all its ugly, heaving, menacing grotesquery.
Well, yeah. Perhaps you could offer some nice articles and scientific data to explain the prevalence of this mysterious and surely satanic ‘rape culture’ business? That’d be a great way to describe it.

Rape culture is encouraging male sexual aggression. Rape culture is regarding violence as sexy and sexuality as violent. Rape culture is treating rape as a compliment,
Ah, yes. That 6 year old account by a bias feminist bickering with some guy publicly is clearly legitimate and indicates that this sort of thing is terribly, horribly common.

as the unbridled passion stirred in a healthy man by a beautiful woman, making irresistible the urge to rip open her bodice or slam her against a wall, or a wrought-iron fence, or a car hood, or pull her by her hair, or shove her onto a bed,
I suppose I should be aroused by that very writing given what brutal, savage rapists-in-waiting men are. Well, it’s not you, it’s me. Feminism says so. I’m starting to think the crazy lady who wrote the articles you keep linking is actually you.

or any one of a million other images of fight-fucking in movies and television shows and on the covers of romance novels that convey violent urges are inextricably linked with (straight) sexuality.

Because aggressive sex even when brought on by the woman or mutually sought is clearly the fault of the evil male who is just trying to compliment her with rape because he is a terrorist. I think I’m catching on.

Rape culture is treating straight sexuality as the norm.

Ahahaha— Oh wait. You’re being serious.

Rape culture is lumping queer sexuality into nonconsensual sexual practices like pedophilia and bestiality.
I better get to informing the gay males out there that they should be discriminating against themselves more often. They’re not supporting us as rapist terrorists properly.

Rape culture is privileging heterosexuality because ubiquitous imagery of two adults of the same-sex engaging in egalitarian partnerships without gender-based dominance and submission undermines (erroneous) biological rationales for the rape culture’s existence.

So can I have a “get out of privilege free” card if I have lots of gay sex rather than straight sex?

Rape culture is rape being used as a weapon, a tool of war and genocide and oppression. Rape culture is rape being used as a corrective to “cure” queer women. Rape culture is a militarized culture and “the natural product of all wars, everywhere, at all times, in all forms.”
Four links to the same lunatic bigot’s personal rant blog. Damn. This is clearly all the proof in the world.
Rape culture is 1 in 33 men being sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.
Yeah… I think your numbers are a little low.

There are estimated to be over 300,000 male rapes per year in American prisons and jails.

Meanwhile A United Nations statistical report compiled from government sources showed that more than 250,000 cases of male-female rape or attempted rape were recorded by police annually. The reported data covered 65 countries.

According to the 2009 United States National Crime Victimization Survey estimates, only 55% of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement officials. When a male is raped, less than 10% are believed to be reported. Female-male and female-female rape are ignored altogether in this survey.

* 2.1% of men reported forced vaginal sex compared to 1.6% of women in a relationship in the previous year. From: Predictors of Sexual Coersion.http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mas2/ID45-PR45.pdf

Rape culture is encouraging men to use the language of rape to establish dominance over one another (“I’ll make you my bitch”).

Language. So this really is a culture, eh? Hell, us rapist terrorists have our own language. I suppose I should take advantage of learning it so that I can later woo a woman with my illustrious rape-speak and then compliment her all night long.
Rape culture is making rape a ubiquitous part of male-exclusive bonding. Rape culture is ignoring the cavernous need for men’s prison reform in part because the threat of being raped in prison is considered an acceptable deterrent to committing crime, and the threat only works if actual men are actually being raped.
You must really love linking to yourself, Almighty Feminist of the Extreme Knowledge of Everything. Anyhow, this bonding thing. It reminds me eerily of a movie called ‘Meet the Spartans’. Are we supposed to rape each other lovingly, or something? How do I go about this rape-bonding business?

Rape culture is 1 in 6 women being sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. Rape culture is not even talking about the reality that many women are sexually assaulted multiple times in their lives. Rape culture is the way in which the constant threat of sexual assault affects women’s daily movements.

Fact: 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. The vast majority of male rape victims, as well as their rapists, are heterosexual.
Oh, woops. Sorry, I seem to have accidentally copy/pasted something. But hey, no need to worry about it because only men are evil rapists.
Rape culture is telling girls and women to be careful about what you wear, how you wear it, how you carry yourself, where you walk, when you walk there, with whom you walk, whom you trust, what you do, where you do it, with whom you do it, what you drink, how much you drink,

Because taking safety precautions is never a good choice! Hell, let’s all leave our doors unlocked while we’re at it and toss our wallets into the street. Clearly, taking rational precautions is BAD and makes men compliment you with evil terrorist heterosexual violence.

whether you make eye contact, if you’re alone, if you’re with a stranger, if you’re in a group, if you’re in a group of strangers, if it’s dark, if the area is unfamiliar, if you’re carrying something, how you carry it, what kind of shoes you’re wearing in case you have to run, what kind of purse you carry, what jewelry you wear, what time it is, what street it is, what environment it is, how many people you sleep with, what kind of people you sleep with, who your friends are, to whom you give your number, who’s around when the delivery guy comes, to get an apartment where you can see who’s at the door before they can see you, to check before you open the door to the delivery guy, to own a dog or a dog-sound-making machine, to get a roommate, to take self-defense, to always be alert always pay attention always watch your back always be aware of your surroundings and never let your guard down for a moment lest you be sexually assaulted and if you are and didn’t follow all the rules it’s your fault.

Have you been checked for a paranoia disorder, by chance? Just curious.

Rape culture is victim-blaming. Rape culture is a judge blaming a child for her own rape. Rape culture is a minister blaming his child victims. Rape culture is accusing a child of enjoying beingheld hostage, raped, and tortured. Rape culture is spending enormous amounts of time finding any reason at all that a victim can be blamed for hir own rape.

Why do I even bother clicking these links anymore. I should just realize by now they’re all your personal rant blog, which is clearly more esteemed than anyone else ever. Anyhow, that aside, you’re totally right. Nobody should ever take precautions ever because that clearly means you’re supporting victim-blaming. Interested in the welfare and safety of another individual? Hah! Clearly that’s just rape-speak (our native language, mind you) for “you dirty hooker!”

Rape culture is judges banning the use of the word rape in the courtroom. Rape culture is the media using euphemisms for sexual assault. Rape culture is stories about rape being featured in the Odd News.
As much as I love your links, it appears your evidence (which surely cannot be refuted) is missing. How unfortunate.

Rape culture is tasking victims with the burden of rape prevention. Rape culture is encouraging women to take self-defense as though that is the only solution required to preventing rape.
Because self-defense and the empowerment that comes with it is BAD!
Rape culture is admonishing women to “learn common sense” or “be more responsible” or “be aware of barroom risks” or “avoid these places” or “don’t dress this way,” and failing to admonish men tonot rape.
Because the basic human need to take rational measures for self-preservation is BAD! Also, men are the only ones who rape, ever. Right? And surely all men rape. Like I totally just showed in my links above. Women being rapists? Pfft, yeah right. We shouldn’t even federally recognize that— oh wait. We don’t. Damn patriarchy, treating those men so well by not recognizing them as victims of female on male rape.

Rape culture is “nothing” being the most frequent answer to a question about what people have been formally taught about rape.

Shun the non-believers. Shun.

Rape culture is boys under 10 years old knowing how to rape.

And being rape victims while forced to pay their rapist child support! I mean, what?

But holy shit. Really. That post? About twice that length.  I think everyone gets the point now. This is quite possibly the most profoundly crazy post I’ve seen in some time here on tumblr, and that says a lot. You can check out the whole thing yourself here.
Main reason I’m addressing this?
Because this, folks, is the poison in the feminism well. This is why it’s broken, will always be broken, and must simply be removed. With poison like this, it won’t ever be repaired.

Obamacare is socialized medicine,” says the Republican Party. No, no — excuse me — socialized medicine is what we have now! People without insurance can go to an emergency ward or throw themselves on the mercy of a doctor, and the cost of all this uncompensated care is shared by all those who have insurance, raising your rates and mine. That is socialized medicine and that is what Obamacare ends. Yet Obama — the champion of private insurance for all — has allowed himself to be painted as a health care socialist.

Actually, Friedman is probably right that Obama should just sell his record … and sell it hard and uncompromisingly.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act does not address the rising costs in healthcare. Go figure.
